The Government Video & Technology Expo is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this month with a solid lineup of conference sessions and exhibitors. The show floor will be open Nov. 15-16 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. (Select paid conference sessions will begin Nov. 14.) According to show officials, hundreds of exhibitors will be on hand, including industry cornerstones such as Canon, Harris, and JVC. Admission to the show floor is free for registered attendees, plus there will be free educational sessions, keynote speakers, and a film festival on the show floor highlighting local projects from the 48 Hour Film Project, DC Shorts Film Festival, and Women In Film & Video. "We've got our best conference lineup ever, and there's a lot of buzz about some major new product announcements at the show," said Linda Cohen, show director. There will also be plenty of networking opportunities with various organizations, including WIFV, ITVA-DC, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

Adding new excitement to this year's show is the Government Video Salute, an award that will showcase new products on the show floor. Selected by the editorial team of Government Video, the Salute will shine the spotlight on products and technologies that are particularly appealing to the government video marketplace. The winners will be announced at the show and featured in next month's issue. "The government is incredibly important to the video industry," said Eric Trabb, vice president of sales and group publisher of the NewBay Media Video/Broadcast Group, which publishes Government Video. "The Salute award shines the spotlight not only on great products but on a great segment of the professional video market."
Talk To Me Beyond the show floor attendees have a choice of paid conferences as well. The GV Magazine Conference Program, for example, offers a variety of tracks and sessions to appeal to a variety of video professionals. Government Video's own Chuck Gloman will lead two sessions on Nov. 16. The first, "Now Hear This: Audio Problems and Solutions," provides an overview of various tools and techniques. A new session, "Camera Support Showdown," will explore the expanding world of camera support products. Gloman is encouraging attendees to bring their own camcorders and test out an array of products during the session. Other sessions will provide production and technology tips, as well as a look at color correction for post production. Management issues get a track as well. Media law takes center stage with "Lights, Camera, Lawsuit," presented by Women in Film & Video, while Government Video columnist Phil Stella talks "Stellar Management." The track also includes "Working in DC: Tips from the Trenches," which provides practical advice about video production in the Washington, DC, area, and the ever-popular "Meet the Government Video Producers" session from ITVA-DC. While streaming media and digital asset management can no longer be considered new developments for the video industry, they still create more than their fair share of confusion. A new Two-Star Conference offers two daylong workshops to specifically address these areas. On Nov. 15, the Streaming Media Workshop begins with a 90-minute session, "Streaming Media Basics," an expanded version of the popular tutorial from last year's program by Rich Mavrogeanes, founder and CTO of VBrick Systems. It's followed by sessions that will spotlight streaming success stories from government agencies and potential technical issues. The Digital Asset Management workshop on Nov. 16 also begins with a basic overview, this one from Damian Saccocio, vice president of marketing and product management for Artesia Digital Media Group. "DAM Case Studies" follows, as well as a look at how DAM is being used by law enforcement. The final session, "Different Approaches to DAM," will include brief overviews of DAM technology from Thomson, Avid, and Harris, as well as a discussion of different DAM definitions and strategies. DigitalMediaDC returns to GVExpo again this year. Powered by the professionals of Future Media Concepts, it offers three days of hands-on training starting on Wednesday, Nov. 14. These targeted tutorials guide you through specific tasks in Adobe, Apple, and Avid NLE workflows. Plus, DigitalMediaDC includes business and production sessions as well.
Government Value For manufacturers, the government market remains a stronghold for their business. "Avid has had a federal government sales team since 1992. During that time, we've realized the government video community is often at the leading edge of video technology adaptation and innovation," said Rhea Mettel, manager, Avid Federal Government Solutions. "For us, the federal marketplace is an indication of where the broader market is headed. "Whether it was nonlinear editing, streaming video, CD and DVD authoring, high-speed collaborative media networks, or digital media asset management, it seems they always continue to push the envelope to deliver increasing quantities of high-quality content -- and they seem to do it with fewer resources than ever before." According to Sony's government marketing manager, Shari Sentlowitz, there's ample marketing and networking potential at GVExpo. "Participating in GVExpo allows us to reach several groups of government customers that are important to us and who can benefit from our range of HD production technologies," she said. "The government market is one of the largest and most diverse segments of video production industry," added Joe Facchini, director of product marketing for Panasonic. "As the industry moves more toward HD, government video professionals are increasingly considering plans for transition from SD, tape-based acquisition to solid-state, high resolution HD. "At GVExpo, we give government agencies and professionals a chance to get hands-on the industry's most innovative broadcast and video products and learn how to take their production to the next level. With the increasing popularity of our solid-state P2 HD products, attendees have direct access to Panasonic engineers; they can obtain in-depth information about the solid-state workflow from acquisition to archive and learn how to incorporate into their production systems. This is a great opportunity for us to interact closely with customers and prospective users." This year's show includes two keynote addresses at the Presentation and Keynote Theater on the show floor. On Nov. 15, John McCoskey, chief technology officer Public Broadcasting Service, will discuss "PBS: The Next Generation." On Nov. 16, Col. Ricky R. Sims, commander of the Soldiers Media Center, will explore the SMC's global information strategy during his presentation, "We Bring You Home." Both keynotes start at 10:30 a.m. at the Presentation and Keynote Theater on the GVExpo show floor. Admission to both keynotes is free for all registered attendees, but seating is limited. Also on the show floor, several exhibitors will provide free educational seminars as part of the Information Showcase. Companies including Sony, Apple, Panasonic, InterCall, Artesia, and Grass Valley will provide in-depth discussions about various technologies and products impacting the video industry. Presentations at noon on Nov. 15 and 16 at the Presentation and Keynote Theater.
