Points Of Interest The NAB Show always has plenty to catch your attention, but here are a few exhibitors on the show floor that are particularly intriguing for 2008:
JVC. According to a company spokesperson, JVC will have a solid-state announcement at NAB. The company's theme for NAB is "HD As It Should Be." A solid-state solution would provide JVC customers with yet another recording option for its ProHD line. jvc.com/pro
Echolab. There's some really innovative things coming out of this company. One is MultiPlayMD, an instant replay system that records up to 32 channels of content simultaneously. Another is SuperSource, a cool feature in the company's new Overture switchers that allows you to build complex transitions and then execute them with a single button press. echolab.com

The new Chyron Online service will provide a one-stop shop for creating, composing, and distributing graphic content. The company hopes to attract anyone who produces content for the Internet with simple access to maps, charts, weather graphics, and more. chyron.com
FOCUS Enhancements. The new FS-5 Direct To Edit hard disk recorder is smaller and weighs less than the FS-4, but it features increased file format support and a new user interface and menu system. Plus, you can log metadata wirelessly via your laptop while shooting with your DV or HDV camcorder. focusinfo.com
Broadcast Pix. Business is booming for this studio-in-a-box manufacturer, and company officials are hoping to build on that success with a new line of Slate HD live video production systems. There are three models at various price range, including the Slate 100 HD with a custom keyboard to the Slate 3000 HD with a tactile control panel and Harris router. broadcastpix.com

NAB MIA Last month, Apple announced that it would not exhibit at the 2008 NAB Show. The official word from Apple is that the company is cutting down on trade show participation, relying on its retail stores and other methods to reach its customer base. Apple isn't alone on the NAB sidelines for 2008 -- Avid Technology dropped out of the 2008 NAB Show late last year. Despite the absence of the two major NLE players, there will be more than 220 first-time exhibitors at the show. "We generally retain about 85 percent of our exhibitors from year to year," said Dennis Wharton, NAB executive vice president of media relations.
New Panasonic AVCHD camcorder Panasonic is adding to its AVCHD product line with the AG-HMC150 handheld camcorder. Similar in appearance to the company's popular AG-DVX100, the new HMC150 feature three 1/3-inch native 16:9 CCD imagers that produce 1080i and 720p images. Other features include optical image stabilization, Leica Dicomar wide-angle zoom lens, XLR audio inputs, and 3.5-inch LCD monitor. Anticipated for fall availability, the HMC150 records in AVCHD, a long GOP HD standard based on MPEG-4 compression, and records on SD and SDHC memory cards. panasonic.com/broadcast
New additions to Sony XDCAM, monitor lines Sony’s XDCAM HD Professional Disc system display at the company’s 24,000-square-foot booth at the NAB Show will include a new camcorder. The PDW-700 (pictured), designed primarily for ENG applications, offers 50 Mbps 4:2:2 HD recording with three 2/3-inch Power HAD FX progressive CCDs. Features include advanced digital signal processing and a pool feed input option (HD/SD-SDI and composite). Also new at NAB is the PDW-HD1500, a half-rack recording deck with numerous interfaces, jog/shuttle operation, and a built-in 4.3-inch color LCD display.
Sony will also expand its BVM-L Series of LCD master monitors with a 42-inch display, the BVM-L420, designed for post suites, master control, and OB trucks. Based on Sony’s TRIMASTER technology, the native 1920x1080 panel features improved contrast and more accurate black details, new color management system, and new LED backlight technology to remove motion blur. In addition, Sony’s LUMA professional LCD line now includes a 42-inch 1920x1080 display with single/quad/multi-viewing, as well as a 17-inch display with WXGA resolution. sony.com/government
Thomson upgrades Ignite Thomson will showcase new operational efficiencies to its Thomson Grass Valley Ignite SD and HD integrated production systems at the NAB Show, including new Ignite IQ software to speed up the process of entering production data and managing resources. Using the system’s Transition Macro Element (TME) technology, which establishes segments and transitions as “events” on a timeline, all segments of a live newscast can be pre-programmed and previewed prior to a show going to air. With Ignite IQ, you can choose to create either fixed properties within the TME or create a base TME template that includes variables that can be entered when the TME is added to a story in the newsroom computer system rundown. Ignite IQ also provides additional automation enhancements such as auto-channel assignment for video playout servers.
In addition, Ingite’s new autoCORRECT facial tracking technology for the Ignite’s SDC/HDC robotic camera systems automatically keeps on-talent properly framed within the shot in a studio environment. It also works with “offsets” and “tracking zones” to accommodate over-the-shoulder graphics and other graphics and keys in use. thomsongrassvalley.com
