Training, networking part of GVExpo
by GV staff
Hundreds of exhibitors. Thousands of products. Endless possibilities. The 8th annual Government Video & Technology Expo is bringing the tools and training you need to the Washington, DC, area.

GVExpo will be held Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at the Washington Convention Center. According to show officials, close to 300 exhibitors are expected on the show floor, including industry heavyweights such as Avid, Canon, Grass Valley, JVC, Panasonic, and Sony. Also, you can talk with representatives from a number of industry associations, such as the Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association and the Interactive Multimedia & Collaborative Communications Alliance.

"This promises to be the best GVExpo ever," said Linda Cohen, show director. "We have an incredible group of exhibitors, a variety of training sessions, and plenty of networking opportunities. We've even added a silent auction this year to benefit four different charities."

Cohen expects close to 7,000 attendees this year. Access to the show floor is free for registered attendees, which includes a number of educational sessions and the keynote address. There are additional fees, however, for DigitalMediaDC and the Government Video Conference Program.
Returning for a third year, DigitalMediaDC offers a variety of hands-on training options, with more than 50 sessions over a three-day period. Note, some training begins Nov. 29, the day before GVExpo opens, so check the GVExpo Web site for specific course details.

Training includes targeted solutions for Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Studio and Motion, and Avid. Also, there are a number of sessions that discuss video and audio production tips, as well as business topics. Plus, there are also two-day Apple Certified Pro courses for Final Cut Pro 5 and Motion.

More Than Technology
The Government Video Conference Program features a number of new sessions designed to address production and management issues. "This year, we've really gone beyond our usual technology focus," said Mark J. Pescatore, executive conference chair (and Government Video editor).

"Conference attendees will not only get up to speed on the latest technologies, but they'll get some perspective on legal issues and purchasing strategies."

In fact, the Production Track on Day 1 begins with a look at budgets and bids. Government Video columnist Andy Mohr leads "Minding Your RFQs," a 90-minute session to help you produce better equipment purchase justifications for upper management, resolve other budgetary issues, and avoid proposal pitfalls.

Laura Possessky, a partner with the firm of Gura & Day, will shed some light on legal issues that are important to video professionals. Presented by Women in Film & Video of Washington, DC, "Lights, Camera, Lawsuit? Video Production & the Law" will provide a 90-minute look at fair use, copyright and rights clearances, shooting permits, release forms, and more.

The National Association of Government Communicators will present a 90-minute session on "Video News Releases," which have become increasingly controversial. Moderated by Michael Sheward, executive director of the NAGC, a panel of media professionals will take a look at this timely topic and assess ethical and legal concerns.

Day 1 concludes, as always, with "Meet the Government Video Producers," a 90-minute panel featuring representatives from the video departments of several federal agencies. Presented by ITVA-DC, it's always one of the most popular sessions at GVExpo. Not only will it provide insight into current video projects from the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, and the Internal Revenue Service, but it also offers potential networking opportunities with these agencies.

On Day 2, the Production Track starts early with a lighting demonstration. Chuck Gloman, known for his product reviews in Government Video, will guide you through "Lighting Problems and Solutions."

Also on Day 2, Dick Reizner is back. The popular Videography columnist and 40-year production veteran opens his "Mixed Bag of Tricks" for two 90-minute sessions. Learn dozens of tips and tricks that help your projects look better.

Additional Tracks
The AV/IT Systems Track on Day 1 provides insight into a number of important topics. Extron's Karl Rosenberg presents "Understanding DVI," a one-hour tutorial on digital visual interfaces. The IMCCA discuss the role of collaborative conferencing technologies in our nation's defense during "Collaboratvie Conferencing and Homeland Security." And the track concludes with "Digital Signage and the Public Sector," a 90-minute session presented by Digital Signage Quarterly magazine and moderated by editor David Keene.

With panelists from the U.S. Postal Service and the Platt Institute, the session will explore the use of digital signage in the government sector and will include a special case study from the USPS.

Day 1 also includes the Streaming/Workflow Track, which begins with the two-hour "Streaming Media Supersession." Join several industry experts as they discuss the latest advances in streaming technologies. The "Workflow Technologies" session will address how digital technologies are changing workflows in presentations, production, and post.

On Day 2, the Managing Assets & Technology Track offers a practical approach to digital technologies and more. "Making the Case for Technology," presented by the Communications Media Management Association, provides a 90-minute primer on capital planning, rent/buy/outsource decisions, and more. It's followed by "Digital Asset Management," a collection of presentations designed to help you explore the challenges and rewards of digital asset management. And "Do It Yourself: Media Moving and Storage" helps you investigate a potential move to digital media storage and distribution. The track concludes with "DVD Authoring Options," a 90-minute discussion about your hardware and software choices.

Also this year, check out the" Case Studies & New Technologies" Track. On Day 1, Grass Valley will introduce its new Infinity Series of camcorders and VTR-like decks, which record to Iomega REV PRO removable disks and Compact Flash solid-state memory cards. Dave Cloud, chief engineer of AFRTS, will also explain how the Pentagon Channel has integrated Sony's XDCAM technology to improve its file-based workflow. On Day 2, Avid will review your HD choices and offer guidelines for workflow considerations. There's also a Law Enforcement Track presented by LEVA on Day 2 that will discuss a variety of forensic video topics.

More From The Floor
If you don't register for the Government Video Conference Program or DigitalMediaDC, there are some free educational seminars for all attendees at the Presentation and Keynote Theater on the show floor. This year's Tech Focus Forum includes sessions on HDV, digital signage, Sony's XDCAM optical disc technology, Panasonic's P2 technology, and server-based workflows.

Plus, be sure to attend this year's keynote address from Mike Fergus of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (and president of LEVA). Fergus has been designing and producing video and film training programs for more than 20 years. And last year, he served as the technical assistance coordinator for the IACP In-car Camera/Video Evidence Project. In his Day 1 keynote address, "In-Car Video: The Digital Dilemma," he will decent the recent research and explore other in-car camera issues.
